My question is if I hand an LTO to one of my network clients who does NOT have Cache-A will they be able to:

a.) see what;s on the tape and if so how and will is have the ICON catalog look above and
b.) do I need to use the internal SW to make the LTO/.tar files or can I use instead, say Z-datadump or WinZip or WinRara which are non-proprietary?

Great article! I can definitely attest to a "dumb" LTO drive. We have a Superloader LTO3 which needs a host card, backup software, and, of course, the Superloader to operate. Add in the server it's running off, I dread when we have problems and I have to do the round robin of phone calls. We bought it about the same time the A drives came out and were a bit more expensive. It was a budget call, and it's been a great investment, but some of the features the A drives give you would be great. Especially the easier access without having to go through Retrospect, which can seem very archaic these days.
